8 Easy Steps To A Healthier Indian Takeaway - Food - Low Calorie

Healthy Indian Cuisine - Does It Exist?

Indian takeaway doesn't have to be perceived as an occasional high calorie, fattening and generally unhealthy treat.

As with all cuisines around the world, too much high calorie food can be detrimental to your personal health. However, being health conscious doesn't mean you have to rule out the occasional Indian takeaway. You will just need to be a bit more careful with your menu choices!

View our 8 easy steps to a healthier Indian takeaway below and find out how you can enjoy a guilt-free Indian takeaway!

Healthier Indian Takeaway Options

Some Indian dishes, especially those which are deep fried or in a thick creamy sauce, are clearly a no-no when keeping calories and your health in mind. In line with this, we have come up with several ideas to guide you when looking to order something healthier from the local Indian takeaway menu.

When it comes to breads, opt for chapattis over nan as they are thinner and contain fewer calories.

Steer clear of dishes which come with a thick and creamy sauce, for example, korma and masala. As an alternative, go for a tomato based dish such as a madras, rogan or jalfrezi.

Dry dishes e.g. those cooked in the traditional tandoor clay oven and without oil are a healthier choice than curry. Opting for tandoori chicken or tikka can help to reduce your calorie intake considerably.

Avoid deep fried items, especially starters and side dishes such as bhajees and samosas. For obvious reasons they are not the healthiest choice. Instead opt for a side of green salad or a lentil based side dish.

Chicken, prawn and vegetable based dishes tend to contain fewer calories than beef or lamb options, so stick with them if you want to minimise your fat and calorie intake.

Avoid additional oil by favouring boiled rice over pilau or egg fried options.

When it comes to chutneys and dips, go for raita as opposed to mango or other chutneys. Raita is cucumber and yoghurt based and therefore a far healthier option than sweet, rich chutneys.

To save a few extra calories, resist washing it all down with a beer or a glass of wine and instead, drink water or juice.

Above all, remember to enjoy your food! Cutting the calories doesn't have to mean missing out on all of the delicious flavour.
