I am a big, typical Aussie sports fan. From the country's most popular Aussie sports, like Rugby and Aussie rules to Olympic Athletics, swimming or even Curling (Google it if you don't know it, it's...intriguing to say the least!). All sports are a display of the world's best sportsmen and women pushing their body to to the very limits of its physical capabilities whilst battling a mental fight: the desire to win and to not be out-smarted by competitors as they race against themselves, others and world records.
Watching sports can have the exactly the same drama as any Hollywood movie. There's the personal fight, the shock of a sudden injury, the battle of the underdog and the shock of losing a match, knowing that there won't be another chance for years to come, if ever. Then there's the love story between two ice-skaters, or the competition between two brothers on opposite teams, oh the drama!
Although watching sports at the pub can be a great way to enjoy your favourite sports with your mates, I prefer to watch sports at home. A bunch of my mates, huddled on the sofa with a beer in one hand and a takeaway in the other. Then of course there's the sports watchers commentary of saying what should/shouldn't have been done, how the tactics are all wrong and how you would have done so much better (whilst contemplating going a diet to get rid of that middle-aged belly). Being in the comfort of your own home you are able to put your feet up, eat on your lap and not have to queue for ages for a warm pint in a plastic cup!
With the Rugby World Cup now in full swing, Aussie sports fans are praying for another win, but with the All Blacks being faced in the next round it's going to be a tough match. It'll be the first real test of both teams' fitness and strength and it'll be a major disappointment for whoever drops out. The odds for a Southern Hemisphere win are good overall, with England recently knocked out by France.
Needless to say I'll be biting my nails, eating a pizza and watching the Wallabies win! (hopefully) Check back to find out how the match went (in my honest opinion!) and as I find out more about some of the world's most obscurest sports!
