Whatever you may say about the area; there is certainly no denying that there is a huge variety of quality takeaway food in Newport.
Activ Newport has recently looked into what fast-food and takeaway options are available for local people in Newport and the options are almost endless.
Gone are the days when, like most of the UK, Newport's only option for 'eating out' was a simple Fish and Chip supper or corn-beef pasty from the local bakers.
As well as the usual takeaway suspects; McDonalds, KFC, Subway, Dominos at Co. Newport as an extensive list of local eateries for that quiet (or not so quiet) takeaway night-in.
Indian options alone are enough to satisfy the most passionate of takeaway connoirseur with multiple varieties on offer across the City which include Tandoori, Bengali and Kashmir to name but a few.
If we travel a bit further East - The Oriental options are just as impressive with their distinguished brands of Szechuan, Cantonese and more traditional Beijing bites.
Most typical nights out these days often cannot end without a nibble from an Aegean or Byzantine-based establishment - Kebab being the most preferable - but by no-means are Newportonians limited to this, if only they would let their tongues experiment a little!
South Wales has been home to Italian migrants since the early 19th and 20th Century and we don't just have Joe Calzaghe as evidence of this. The City of Newport offers a fine selection of Italian restaurants which do (surprisingly) cater for the Takeaway audience - although, refusal to stay and eat in a proud Italian dinnery maybe running the risk of upsetting some people that you don't really want to upset....Trust me, i've seen the films!
You may, at this point, be thinking....well, so what? Doesn't every decent town or city these days offer such takeaway options? and in short, I would probably have to say yes, however, what's most impressive about Newports takeaway options is how they are strategically and conveniently located across almost all, key districts of the City. In pure Square Mileage, I think you'd find it hard to find many UK cities of Newport's relatively small size, with such a selection within the given area. It's fair to say that no matter where you are in Newport, you're never more than a mile away from a decent selection of takeaways - now whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is another argument altogether.
I think in a world where people's social calendars are dictated by the viewing times of X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing and the vast majority of the UK are having 'Nights out In' all through the week, the good old takeaway plays an important part in people's lives and its good to know that Newport, at least, can supply the demand on this front. If the global offering that Newport Takeaways provide are not exactly your cup of tea, then there's always a home-cooked meal!
