One fifth of Edinburgh's population consists of students, which is no surprise as Edinburgh is one of the most sought after cities to reside within the United Kingdom due to the fantastic lifestyle, stunning and historic architecture and vibrant atmosphere. Edinburgh is home to four universities, these are The University of Edinburgh, Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh Napier University and Queen Margaret University.
Fountainbridge is a popular area for students to reside, due to its central location, a fifteen minute walk from Edinburgh's City Centre. House prices in this area are not as expensive as the city centre as they are aimed towards a student market. The area has all the amenities a student needs, as it is home to several pubs, a multi screen cinema, restaurants, takeaway restaurants, a Tesco Express, a bowling ally, a casino and a Virgin Active fitness centre. There are excellent public transport services nearby, running to all four universities from this location.
Flats in Haymarket are another convenient option for students, the area is home to Haymarket train station. It is also a short distance from the city centre allowing students easy access to a variety of shops, clubs and restaurants the area has to offer. Flats in this area are well located for access to The University of Edinburgh, there are also excellent bus links to other university campuses located further afield.
Another very student orientated area is Bruntsfield, this area has benefits from high quality flats, although they are slightly costly. The area has a lot to offer for students with an array of shops, pubs and restaurants, as well as being a twenty minute walk from Edinburgh City Centre. The Royal Commonwealth Pool is situated nearby, hosting a swimming pool, fully equipped gymnasium and several fitness classes, although the centre is currently closed for refurbishment, it will re-open in 2011.
Flats to rent in Marchmont are situated very nearby to both Edinburgh and Edinburgh Napier University, making it a very popular area with students. It also benefits from being a very short distance from the city centre.
Grassmarket is a very lively and vibrant area, situated in the old town. The Grassmarket is home to some of the best bars and restaurants in the city. This area is a very popular social meeting place for many students. Grassmarket is nearby to the University of Edinburgh and offers excellent transport services to Napier University.
